Ponte de Sao Goncalo – Amarante
The Bridge of San Gonzalo is located on the stunning river Tamega in Amarante, It is the entry card to the historic center of this beautiful city.
The current building is eighteenth century, due to a collapse that occurred in 1763 and it led to the reconstruction of the former structure that would date of 1250, is unaware however that it would also still a reconstruction of a previous structure.
It is known that here would Roman road linking Amarante Guimarães and Braga, so there the conditions for a Roman bridge at this location.
The Bridge of San Gonzalo was also known for being the scene of the "Defense of Amarante Bridge" in 1809, during the French Invasions.
